What Kind of Car Insurance Should You Really Have in Texas? A Personal Injury Attorney’s Advice

What kind of car insurance does a Personal Injury Attorney have…

If you’re wondering what kind of car insurance a personal injury lawyer actually carries, I’m here to break it down for you.
As an attorney who helps people navigate accident claims every day, I’ve seen firsthand what kind of coverage makes a real difference when things go wrong. Living in a place like Houston—where accidents are frequent and uninsured drivers are everywhere—having the right insurance is critical.
Here’s what I carry on my own policy, and what I recommend to just about anyone driving in Texas.

1. Bodily Injury Liability – $50,000 per person / $100,000 per accident

While the legal minimum in Texas is $30,000, I carry a $50,000/$100,000 policy. This protects not only the people in the other vehicle if I’m ever at fault, but it also helps protect me from potential lawsuits and personal financial risk. Too many people carry the minimum and find themselves exposed.

2. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage – $50,000

This is an absolute must if you’re driving around Houston. I’ve represented countless clients who were hit by someone without any insurance—or with a policy too small to cover damages. Without this coverage, you could be stuck paying for your own medical treatment and repairs, even if the accident wasn’t your fault. I carry $50,000 in UM/UIM coverage because I know how often this happens.

3. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) – $5,000

PIP is another essential. It provides cash early in the process to help cover medical bills, lost wages, or other expenses right after an accident—without needing to wait on the other driver’s insurance. In Texas, you can choose a range between $1,000 and $10,000. I’ve chosen a $5,000 policy because it gives me some cushion without overpaying for more than I need.

Final Thoughts

I’ve helped a lot of people through some really difficult times after a crash—and I’ve also seen how much smoother things go when they had the right insurance in place.
So if you’re reviewing your policy, here’s my advice: Don’t settle for the minimum. It may save a few bucks now, but it could cost you thousands later.
And if you’ve already been in an accident and aren’t sure what to do next, give my office a call.
